Summer is in full swing and that means it’s time to get outside and soak up the sun’s radiance. No matter how often we slather on sunscreen, there’s always that extra hour you stayed in the sun that you hadn’t planned on, or that unreachable spot on your back that you missed covering with SPF. Whether you are feeling the heat of your latest sunburn or your skin is simply feeling parched from the sun, this After Sun Spray will bring you some natural, soothing relief.

Our After Sun Spray is made using a combination of essential oils and ingredients you may already have in your pantry or can find easily at your local drugstore.

Aloe vera is a well-known remedy for soothing sunburns. But we tend to avoid the bottled green gel we’re all familiar with seeing at our local drugstores because of the added chemicals and synthetic ingredients. Aloe vera oil and juice are our favorite forms of aloe because they are both natural and 100% pure.

First let’s talk about the ingredients:

- Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera is a powerhouse of antioxidants, antibiotics, and works as a stimulator of cell growth. It’s also rich in calcium, sodium, iron, potassium, manganese, zinc, folic acid, amino acids and vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C and E. Aloe vera is suitable for all skin types including highly sensitive skin.
- Witch Hazel: Witch Hazel has both antibacterial and antiseptic qualities which can help skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. It also shrinks blood vessels (which helps tighten skin), promotes faster wound healing, soothes itching, and refreshes and rejuvenates the skin.
- Lavender Essential Oil: Lavender has tissue regeneration and healing properties that can quickly relieve burns.
- Peppermint Essential Oil: Peppermint contains menthol which has a cooling effect on the body bringing much needed relief for sunburns.
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Eucalyptus has antiseptic qualities making it good for healing wounds, burns, cuts and sores.

Summer is here and that means it’s the time of year when everything is in bloom here in the Pacific Northwest. As Oregonians, we live for summer- a time when we can enjoy a much needed break from the normal rain and grey skies we live in nine months out of the year.

While we love spending our summers outside gardening, camping, or simply enjoying a warm evening in our backyards, seasonal allergies can certainly put a damper on things. Whether it’s a change in the weather or a certain plant in bloom, we often find ourselves sneezing, itching our eyes, or becoming overwhelmed with nasal congestion. Luckily, we’ve discovered a natural remedy that is both simple and easy to create- the Allergy Relief Oil Blend.

What makes this oil blend so effective against allergies are the blend of essential oils lavender, lemon and peppermint. Together these three essential oils create a natural antihistamine which helps to reduce inflammation in the body and eases allergy symptoms.

Here's a little more info about these three essential oils:

- Lavender: Helps eliminate nervous tension, relieves pain and respiratory problems. It's also anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.
- Lemon: Is a natural anti-biotic, antiviral, antiseptic, and disinfectant.
- Peppermint: Contains menthol which helps clear the respiratory tract and has a cooling effect on the body. Because it is an expectorant, it provides instantaneous, though temporary, relief from nasal congestion, asthma, cold and cough.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• 30 drops lemon essential oil
• 25 drops lavender essential oil
• 10 drops peppermint essential oil
• Sunflower oil
• 10ml roll-on bottle

Combine essential oils in a small roller bottle then fill to the top with sunflower oil.

Note: All supplies and DIY kits are available at the Molly Muriel Apothecary in Milwaukie, Oregon.

Why Sunflower Oil?

We chose this particular carrier oil because sunflowers remind us of summer and sunshine. Sunflower oil is also rich in Vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant in the body. It also has anti-inflammatory qualities, which are derived from it’s vitamin content. You can read more about the benefits of sunflower oil here

Note: If you prefer not to use sunflower oil or want to use something you already have in your kitchen, we recommend using extra virgin olive oil or sweet almond oil.

How To Apply:

Whenever you feel the allergy itch coming on, apply this oil blend to the bottoms of your feet and the base of your skull/neck. You can also rub it onto any irritated skin areas like around your eyes and nose.

Use Caution:

• Do not use this oil blend on children under the age of 6.
• Test the oil blend on a small portion of your skin first. If you experience any sensitivity or irritation, do not use.
• Essential oils should never be applied directly to skin, always use a carrier oil for dilution.
• Molly Muriel Apothecary is not a medical doctor by any means, so we cannot guarantee this oil blend will work for you. Consult your doctor before using essential oils.

Amazing Arnica

Happy March! Here in Portland the flowers are blooming, the daphne smells fragrant, and the bees are coming to life. Many people are also starting new exercise regimens, which has prompted us to bring to you the benefits of Arnica.

Although we highlighted this herb last March, once again it seemed like the perfect time to remind readers how they can benefit from this amazing plant. So, here goes...

Meet Arnica Montana, commonly known as Arnica, but often referred to as wolf's bane, mountain tobacco, and mountain arnica. It is a bright yellow flower that looks similar to a daisy. But don't let it's beauty fool you. This herb packs a punch! Arnica is know for it's analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and bruise healing properties. What this means in laymen's terms is that people use this sweet little plant to relieve pain, eliminate inflammation, and get rid of bruising quickly.

Arnica is native to the mountainous regions of Europe, the western United States, and British Columbia. The plant flowers usually in late July. Typically it is the aerial portion of the plant that is harvested, dried, and used as an herbal remedy. The flower should not be taken internally.

Onto my personal testimony. It all started back in 2004 when I was preparing for my first marathon. I had been a runner since middle school, but had never trained for 26.2 miles. A couple months in my knees started to really feel it. In the past I had used Arnica cream, so I figured I could make my own now that I had Arnica available to me in herb form. I did a 30 day solar infusion of Arnica into a blend of base oils and voila, my new remedy! I called it Trauma Healer, and it really helped get me through the pain and inflammation of those long runs. A couple years later I added it to the Molly Muriel line and it has taken off. I decided to make a similar product in lotion form for those who prefer a cream to an oil.

Arnica is also known to be used for painful joints from arthritis, or inflammation from injury.

To get some for yourself, visit our retail shop (if you're in the Portland area), or our online store. You won't be sorry!

Apothecary Spotlight ~ Tillandsia

Confession.... I have a new obsession.... it's called a tillandsia, although most people know it as an air plant. These magnificent creatures have crept into my world and we're having a blast together! Here are some from my collection.

There are about 550 species of tillandsias and they are native to warmer climates. You can find them growing in the wild in jungles, rainforests, and even arid deserts. Their roots attach to trees or rocks, and they absorb moisture and nutrients through their leaves. So they don't need soil. This makes them very versatile in a home environment. We like to experiment and find creative homes for the tillandsias in our shop.

If you don't think you have a 'green thumb', never fear, these little beauties might change your mind. Caring for them is really quite easy. We soak ours in water once a week for about an hour, gently shake the droplets off, and lay them out to dry. As for light, they like a lot of it, but not directly. Keep them in a naturally well lit room but not in the sunlight for too long. And they like good air circulation. It's that simple! These gems will add some serious goodness to your space. Once in a while they'll flower (which is an amazing sight), and they just may sprout a 'pup' and you'll end up with another airplant.

Check out our retail shop for a fine selection of tillandsia to brighten your day. We're working on adding these to our online shop.

The Salt Cave Experience at Zama

Last December I visited Zama Massage to try a new treatment. It had been an exhausting season and I knew I needed something drastic to help calm my nerves and lower my stress level. I had heard about this new treatment that was offered there called Halo Therapy that basically entails a massage in a Salt Cave. I read up a bit, and knew it was for me. So, I thought I'd bring this awareness to you in case you need some healthy stress-relieving.

When you first walk into Zama Massage, on NE Broadway in Portland, OR, you are greeted with a lovely environment filled with soft, relaxing music, calmness, and an array of healthy products. This setting made me instantly feel relaxed!

I was escorted downstairs to the salt cave and entered a semi-lit room that seemed to have glowing salt rocks lining the walls and ceiling. It was an amazing sight. I knew at that moment that I was in for quite an experience, and indeed it was!

As soon as the halo generator turned on, and the microscopic salt particles infiltrated the air and my lungs, I instantly felt like I could breathe deeper than I had in months. I later learned that it was also the negative ions surrounding me that really brought with them the intense relaxation I felt. As the walls glowed, my mind sunk further into a truly calm and peaceful state.

This treatment was unlike any I had experienced before, and it helped that my massage therapist was an extremely talented lady named Riza who intuitively knew exactly what I needed in that moment! I left that session knowing that I would be returning, and telling all of my friends about this. And that is exactly why I felt the need to bring this information to you.

Zama Massage is the only place in Portland that you will find this wonderful "salt cave" experience. You can also visit them just to sit in the cave and breathe in the healing magic.  If you feel the need to bring some deep relaxation, calmness, or de-stressing into your life, I would highly recommend this treatment. You can find out more information on the health benefits at www.zamamassage.com as well as any specials they may be running.
