With the new year upon us, I have been looking for new ways to detox my body after the busy holiday season. This year especially I’ve noticed my face needing some extra love. The combination of harsh winter weather, sugary treats and high fat foods has left me in desperate need of a detoxifying clay face mask to freshen my face for the new year.
Trying to detox? Drink more water...
Water is essential during a detox, especially for your skin. Drinking the requisite amount of water for your weight daily, can shed years off your face and skin. While trying to detoxify, be sure to drink water often to help flush out the toxins from your body.
DETOXIFYING INGREDIENTS FOR A FACE MASK:
We’ve chosen ingredients for their ability to draw out toxins and cleanse the skin.
Kaolin Clay: This clay is most commonly known to balance oily skin by reducing the production of sebum. This clay also contains a high content of silica which helps to remove dead skin cells and regenerate.
Bentonite Clay: This unique clay produces an “electrical charge” when wet, giving it the ability to absorb toxins and neutralize heavy metals, impurities and chemicals.
Pumice: An optional ingredient, adding pumice to your face mask will help exfoliate your skin as you rinse off the mask.
Green Tea Powder: Green tea is rich in antioxidants which help to flush toxins from the skin. The catechin compounds in green tea are known to reactivate skin cells that are dying due to poor lifestyle habits, exposure to sunlight and even pollution.
Plantain Leaf Powder: Plantain is known to soothe external inflammation, prevent itching, and treat skin conditions like acne and rosacea. It’s also known to prevent scarring by inducing faster healing and regeneration of skin cells.
Rose Hip Seed Oil: This oil is very light weight and absorbs quickly into the skin. It is rich in vitamins and antioxidants and helps to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Rose hip seed oil also corrects UV damage from the sun and hydrates the skin.
Essential Oils for Detox: You can use any combination of essential oils that you like. We recommend choosing a few that have detoxifying qualities like lemon, grapefruit, peppermint, lavender, ginger, rosemary or tea tree.
DETOX CLAY FACE MASK
• 4 tablespoons kaolin clay
• 1 1/2 tablespoons bentonite clay
• 1 teaspoon pumice (optional)
• 1 teaspoon green tea powder
• 1 teaspoon plantain leaf powder
• 1/2 teaspoon rose hip seed oil
• 24 drops essential oil (We used 12 drops pink grapefruit, 8 drops lemon, 4 drops rosemary)
Combine clays, pumice and powders in a bowl. Stir to combine and set aside. In another small bowl, combine the rose hip seed oil with the essential oils. Then add in approx. one tablespoon of the clay powder mix and stir until incorporated. Continue adding the clay powder mix, a tablespoon at a time, until the oils are evenly distributed into the powder.
How To Use:
Combine 1 tablespoon of the powdered clay mask with 2 teaspoons of water (you can also use herbal tea, honey, yogurt, milk, or fresh squeezed juice instead of water). Dampen your face and apply the mud mask generously. Leave on until dried completely and clay cracking appears. Rewet the mask with warm water, using your fingers, massage in a circular motion to exfoliate your skin (taking care to avoid eyes). Rinse completely. Pat face dry with clean towel.
