History: Bergamot is a citrus fruit native to Southeast Asia but was introduced to Europe, and particularly Italy and is also found in the Ivory Coast, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. Bergamot oil is made from a tree bearing citrus fruit resembling a cross between an orange and a grapefruit, but in a pear-shape. The name is derived from the city Bergamo in Lomardy, Italy, where the oil was first sold. The oil has been used in Italian folk medicine for many years, primarily for fever and worms. Recent research in Italy has shown that bergamot oil has a wide variety of applications, particularly used for mouth, skin, respiratory, and urinary tract infections.

Therapeutic Properties: The therapeutic properties of bergamot oil include analgesic, antidepressant, antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-spasmodic, stomachic, calmative, deodorant, digestive, febrifuge, vermifuge and vulnerary.

Suggested Uses:
• Aromatherapy
• Massage/bath oil
• Skin preparations (lotions, creams, soaps)

Bergamot oil is the characteristic flavor of Earl Grey tea and has a long history of use in potpourri and perfumes. It can be used in the treatment of depression, stress, tension, and skin problems like psoriasis and eczema.

PRECAUTIONS

Oil Specific: May cause skin irritation. Bergamot essential oil contains bergaptene which becomes poisonous if exposed to sunlight. Exposure to sunlight should be avoided after it is applied to the skin.
